LOR / MOI

Apply for LOR / MOI

Letters of recommendation and medium-of-instruction certificates for study or work abroad.

Two different letters

A Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is written by a faculty member who has taught you, printed on university letterhead and countersigned by the Head of Department. It speaks to your academic work — the papers you took, the project you completed, the questions you asked — and not to your character in general.

A Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate states that your programme was taught and examined in English. It is issued by the Registrar's office and is the document most often asked for by universities in Germany, Canada and the Gulf states.

The two are applied for separately. A single application cannot produce both.

Who can apply

Applicant

Eligibility

LOR — current student

From the sixth semester of a four-year programme, or the fourth of a three-year programme

LOR — alumni

Within five years of graduation

LOR — research applicant

A supervisor's letter is required in addition to the departmental LOR

MOI — current student

After completing the first year

MOI — alumni

Any year of passing

Before you apply

▪

A LOR is written by a teacher, not generated by an office. Approach the faculty member first; the application only records that they have agreed.

▪

Your name must match the marksheet exactly. A name change requires an affidavit and a correction in the records first.

▪

The MOI is issued in English only. The university does not issue bilingual certificates.

▪

Letters are issued once. A replacement copy is treated as an additional copy and charged accordingly.

How to apply

Step 01

Choose the document

LOR or MOI. One application per document; a LOR for two universities needs two applications.

Step 02

Name your referee

For a LOR, enter the faculty member who has agreed to write it, with their department and email.

Step 03

Pay the fee

₹500 per LOR, ₹300 per MOI. Courier abroad is charged at actuals.

Step 04

Collect or receive

MOI in 3 working days. LOR within 7, once the referee submits the draft.

LOR and MOI questions

Can the university issue a LOR without a faculty member?

+

No. A letter signed by an officer who has not taught you is worthless to an admissions committee, and the university will not issue one. If no faculty member agrees, the application is closed and the fee refunded.

Is the MOI accepted by German universities?

+

Yes, when submitted with the transcript. A few institutions ask for the MOI in a sealed envelope sent directly by the university; tick the sealed-copy option on the application and provide the address.

How long is a LOR valid?

+

Most admissions committees treat a LOR as current for twelve months. The letter itself carries no expiry date, but a letter written for one application should not be reused for another without the referee's agreement.

Can someone else collect the letter for me?

+

Yes, with a signed authorisation letter and a copy of your identity card. The person collecting must bring their own photo identity. Letters are never released to a courier without a tracking number on record.

Questions about a referee, a deadline or a sealed copy are answered by the Registrar's office.
